movement of the chart line before it transpires. The edge that they want is the confidence to follow the direction the stock is moving but be able to correctly predict what will happen before it occurs. While they never know for sure, some get quite skillful at predicting where it is going. They are not afraid to visualize the upward or downward move before it takes place.
One way to develop this is to look at a real chart and then close your eyes and imagine how the chart continues. The idea here is that you simply want to be able to draw it clearly in your mind's eye. Open your eyes, again look at the actual chart for a minute, then close your eyes and visualize it again, adding something to what you last saw.
Shuttle back and forth from the actual chart on the monitor to your inner imagined chart. In practicing this shuttling back and forth, you will enhance your ability to visualize clearly in the mind's eye, and also to visually add to the chart in the direction you would like to see the trend line move. Besides enhancing confidence in your predictive ability, doing this exercise helps you feel more as if you're leading the market rather than following it.
This is one form of what the "edge" is all about that the professional traders are always trying to achieve. Let's be clear: I'm not saying that you can make the chart move in the direction you want to see it, only that you can imagine it positive so that your confidence to make the trade is increased.
To be able to imagine something in the mind's eye, to see it clearly as a real possibility is the first step toward being able to make it a reality. Put negatively, if you can't imagine something as possible, you are not going to ever make it a reality.
Meditation: A Method for Increasing Present-Centeredness
Watching our own thoughts requires the ability to decipher them from the inner chatter that fills our minds. The nature of the mind is that it churns out thoughts on its own, most of which are totally out of conscious control.
Tuning in to the feeling tones associated with these thoughts also requires the ability to see how thoughts create feelings. And being able to stay focused on the monitor without undue distraction by fear or greed means knowing how to come back to the present, as we notice the mind drift away into thoughts and fantasies. All of these skills can be enhanced through learning a basic centering meditation.
