so they should not get complacent nor become overconfident, leading to unreasonable risks.
The Hendlin Perfectionism Inventory (HPI)
If you are not sure whether you are a perfectionist, or want to determine how perfectionistic you are compared to others, take the following inventory, which was originally created as a tool for my 1992 book on perfectionism, When Good Enough Is Never Enough.
Instructions: For each statement, fill in the blank with the number from the following scale that best describes how you feel. Don't go back and change any answers and try not to ponder your answers for more than 20 seconds.
0 = I disagree strongly.
3 = I agree somewhat.
1 = I disagree somewhat.
4 = I agree very much.
2 = I feel neutral about this.

1. I think of myself as a perfectionist.
2. I take pride in telling others that I'm a perfectionist.
3. I am easily annoyed when others don't measure up to my expectations.
4. If I can't do something well, there is no reason to try it at all.
5. I am hard on myself when I lose a game, contest, or competition.
6. I set very high goals for myself no matter what I'm doing.
7. I like my material possessions in order and get upset when they are disturbed.
8. I like my work place very neat and clean and find it hard to work if it is disturbed.
9. I have trouble accepting the fact that others don't expect as much from themselves as I expect from myself.
10. I get angry when people I care about don't perform up to my expectations.
11. I get impatient and annoyed when I have to waste time because of others' incompetence.
12. I find it hard to accept how people can do such sloppy work and get away with it.
